Keni was born in 1968 in the small town of Marlow, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of four children, and his family was very poor. Keni's father was a sharecropper, and his mother worked as a waitress. Keni grew up in a house without running water or electricity, and he often had to go hungry.

In 2003, Keni was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was involved in the Battle of Fallujah, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism in combat.
